More than 100 Fort Wayne Metals employees teamed up with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne to construct panels for two homes on the campus of Fort Wayne Metals Thursday. It is the fourth year Fort Wayne Metals has held an on-site panel build, resulting in seven homes since 2020—one in 2020, 2021, and 2022 and two in 2023 and 2024.

“Partnerships, like what we have with Fort Wayne Metals, are an example of how we can come together to have a positive impact for the community,” Habitat for Humanity Gifts Manager Christine Lyons said. “What we appreciate with Fort Wayne Metals is they give employees an opportunity to come out and help make that impact. Sure—it’s great to have events and donations but having it on-site and giving people the opportunity to feel like they’re having a direct impact on something for an hour of the day is special."

There were four one-hour panel building sessions between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and interested employees could take a paid hour of their workday to take part.

“Inside the walls of Fort Wayne Metals, we say the work we do every day can improve people’s lives,” Fort Wayne Metals Employee Engagement Specialist Angie Chaney said. “Being able to take that outside into our parking lot and spend an hour of time building the walls for someone’s new home each year is another way we get to do that.”

The efforts of Fort Wayne Metals employees, along with guidance from the construction team at Habitat for Humanity, resulted in panels for a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home and a four-bedroom, two-bathroom home. Both will be move-in ready for a local family in the Renaissance Pointe neighborhood of southeast Fort Wayne by late fall.

“The energy of Fort Wayne Metals employees is awesome,” Lyons said at the build. “The employees have come out here willingly and happy. I love seeing the smiles and you can tell that they feel good about what they’re doing.”
